A Wedding Day to Remember

What do you do when someone you love is at hospice on your wedding day? You bring the wedding to them.

For this bride, having her grandma at her wedding was always part of the plan.

In fact, one of the reasons she and her husband decided to get married in Canada was so her grandmothers could be there.

But life had other plans.

Her other grandmother passed away just as they began planning the wedding last March. Then, earlier this year, Grandma Mariam was admitted to hospital. Her granddaughter rushed to Canada, simply hoping she would have the chance to see her again.

She never expected to have her grandma at her wedding.

But then something beautiful happened.

After receiving care at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Grandma Mariam began to regain some of her strength. Her granddaughter says she truly believes the incredible care she received helped revitalize her.

And suddenly, the wedding day they had imagined might actually be possible.

So they brought the wedding to Grandma.

The back patio at hospice was transformed into a beautiful little chapel among the trees. Family gathered close. There was laughter, love and the kind of joy that seems to fill a space.

And then the bride walked in.

Grandma Mariam saw her granddaughter in her wedding dress.

That smile said everything.

For this bride, it meant the world to have her grandma there.

Mariam has always been a steady and loving presence in her life,  the kindest and most generous person she knows. She loves her granddaughter’s husband, Harry, and has always joked that she wanted to steal him away from her.

And if you know Grandma Mariam, you know there is always laughter. She has a quick wit, a wonderful sense of humour and, apparently, a serious talent for the kitchen,  famous for her butter tarts, pies, fudge and cabbage rolls.

She is the kind of person whose presence becomes woven into a family’s story.

And on this day, she was there.

This is hospice.

Yes, hospice is a place where people come to receive end-of-life care. But it is also a place where life keeps happening.

Where families gather.

Where laughter fills the halls.

Where special moments are made.

Where people can continue to be the grandma, the mom, the dad, the spouse, the friend, the person they have always been.

Our team works hard to make sure our residents can continue to live fully and experience the moments that matter most to them. And family? Family is always welcome here.

This wedding brought so much joy to one family and honestly, to everyone at hospice who had the privilege of witnessing it.

It was a beautiful reminder that even when time feels uncertain, there can still be moments of incredible joy.

There is still life to be lived.

There is still laughter to share.

There is still love to celebrate.

And sometimes, that looks like a granddaughter walking down the aisle toward her grandmother at hospice.

Because hospice isn’t just about the end.
It’s about making the most of every day we have.
